Lovecraft Doc @ COMICON 2008

Greetings all . Just wanted to drop a heads up to any of y'all in the San Diego area. It's been a long road, but the documentary film "LOVECRAFT: Fear Of The Unknown" is complete and will premiere at ComiCon 2008 in San Diego on July 24th, 8:00pm.

As a lifelong fan of HPL, creating the music for this project has been a dream realized for me.
I have been invited (along with the production team) to attend the event, and to do a Q & A after the film's screening. It's very exciting to think of how many people will be there, as over 120,000 people attend ComiCon each year. (no pressure.....)

The film features educated insight into the man and his legacy from :

John Carpenter (director - Halloween, The Thing)
Neil Gaiman (author - Fragile Things, American Gods)
Guillermo Del Toro (director - Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy)
Ramsey Campbell (author - Inhabitant of the Lake, Darkest Part of the Woods)
Stuart Gordon (director - Re-Animator, From Beyond)
S.T. Joshi (author/biographer - H.P. Lovecraft: A Life, The Angry Right)
Caitlin R. Kiernan (author - Daughter Of Hounds, Silk)
Andrew Migliore (founder - H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival)
Robert Price (author / editor - Crypt of Cthulhu, The Da Vinci Fraud )
Peter Straub (author - Ghost Story, Lost Boy Lost Girl)

The documentary also features creature art from some of the top Lovecraftian artists including Tom Sullivan (artist, "The Evil Dead" and "Call Of Cthulhu" role playing game).

Hope to see any friendly faces there-
IA!

I have always executed my own WILL, but am now requesting the participation of any with Dark talent to assist me in a "well deserved" "Special Dark Operation." YES, I AM and WILL continue the "project" by my own Sorcery, but any brothers and sisters who wish to join (as hackers say, "For educational purposes only" - >;) would be MOST welcome. If interested in "exercising your talents," please message me here, then I will provide you with an anonymous email address that we can communicate over (so as not to violate the Tribe TOS, if you get my meaning). All will be explained.

I am really trying to improve my art skills, doing more sketching and stuff like that. I really, really, really love the odd, the strange and most of all Cthulhu! Anyone know of any good links or sites where I can get some inspiration with some Cthulhu themed art that I can practice copying to improve my skills? Or even just some good sites with odd art, thanks!

I got home from work last night and in the mail was my tax refund check and my new copy of "The Call of Cthulhu" DVD from HPLHS. Screw the refund check! I spent last night watching and then re-watching it. Not bad at all!

I did notice one glaring error. During the voyage from Dunedin to Oslo, he stops to ask questions in an office that is quite noticably lit with florescent tube lighting overhead (the upward shot clearly shows this). While this type of mercury vapor lighting had been invented as early as 1855, it was not until 1927 that a high pressure version made the florescent tube practicle and not until 1937 that the first ones were commercially produced. A small point, yes, but one that broke the suspension of disbelief for me.

Also, while the original story line is followed fairly faithfully, there are a few minor deviations, such as when the crew of the Emma found the Alert adrift without it's crew and decided to search for the island mentioned in the ships log, instead of having to fight the crew of the Alert.

All in all though, is was a good time. I really loved the whole silent movie format. Brilliant!

After much seeking, pulling of hair & emploring elder Gods, I finally posses the H. P. Lovecraft Tarot, 2nd edition - the sepia toned one. It is a work of Art indeed, and it's resparked my desires to read for myself & others again. Of course, now I'll REALLY be telling the truth & revealing things best left unsaid.

There's a recent article at the website http://www.salon.com about HPL. Just click on "Books" and look down the right side of the page. You'll find it. To read the whole article, you have to either subscribe to Salon.com or get a free "day pass" by sitting through a brief little Flash-based ad by Verizon or someone. The article is interesting, and it's worth putting up with the ad, which lets you view the whole site for free for a day (sets a cookie, I think).

R'lyeh

a temporary fate of an area in the remote southern pacific, a place which in ages past was home to creatures and forces which predated human tenancy of our world. little is known of those days, yet around the world are instances of groups consecrated to the worship of these "Old Ones". fragments of information are preserved in various ancient manuscripts, most notably the semi-legendary Necronomicon. according to these tales the Old Ones, who may have originated far from this world, were beings who had shape, but were not composed of ordinary matter. their powers were great, and they could travel both earth and sky - so long as the stars were "right", a term which suggests some astrological basis for the religion. when the starts were "wrong" they could not live, but neither did they truly die. instead, they lay in stone houses in their great city R'lyeh, waiting for the time when the stars again were right, and when someone would come by to release them from their entombment. of all these Old Ones, the greatest and most powerful was named Cthulhu.

R'lyeh itself was described as as a city of strange, cyclopean architecture, seemingly constructed according to some alien principle of geometry; a city now cloaked with aeons' worth of slime and seaweed, lying forgotten somewhere on the ocean floor. worshippers of Cthulhu around the globe could be heard to chorus a strange chant which, translated, said, "In his house at R'lyeh dead Cthulhu waits dreaming".

these curious fragments of folklore were given unexpected corroboration in 1925 by a sailor, Gustaf Johansen, the Norwegian second mate of a New zealand schooner, who was found aboard a drifting steamer in the cold southern pacific. he was the only living man on the ship. he told of how at latitude 47o 9' S, longitude 126o 43' W, in the midst of what should have been open and empty ocean, his ship came upon an unexpected island, a shore of mud and ooze with a great stone pillar rising into the sky. going ashore the crew found buildings of some kind, constructed from huge blocks of greenish stone, and with strangely carved statues and bas-reliefs depicting non-human creatures. his account stressed the peculiarity of the architecture, as if princples unknown to Euclid were in use in the design: as they moved across the stone, verticals would become horizontals, and concavities convexities, without any evidence of transition. the place was impossible for the human eye to assimilate.

after this Johansen's account became fragmentary and seemingly hysterical. it told of a slab of stone sliding to one side, revealing an abyss within which was an unnatural darkness, he claimed, came a creature which destroyed the rest of his crew: a giant creature not dissimilar to the image found on the carvings used by worshipers of Cthulhu.

Now i know Lovecraft wrote of this same expierience in the call of cthulhu i believe, what do you all think of it. apperently it is a documented case of the sailor, but was he delusional or did he really meet one of the Old Ones, Cthulhu? and if you had the means to would you go to that exact lattitudal spot that the sailor spoke of a seek R'lyeh? when do you think the stars will be "right' again for the awakening of the "Old Ones" and the great "Cthulhu"?

Hey, Cthulhu needs You. In these dim times the lesser evil has take over and is running the show. Now I granted that Cthulhu is above the petty concerns of moralities like good and evil
But I believe that the time (and the stars) are right for a truly awesome and malevolent power. Let's demand a recount and write in "Cthulhu" for president! Let's the put "Demon" back in to "Democracy!
